MovieWatcher: The Incredible Hulk

I’m a little behind, so I’m trying to catch up today…

I like my superheroes to appear a little human; I like them to be strong and rough around the edges, but I also like them to show a degree of emotion, a touch of a soft side. I think that is why I didn’t like the first Hulk movie…that dude was just emotionless. He tore through the movie on a rampage, but for what? I never knew…

But this Hulk, the Incredible one, was just that…incredible! Edward Norton did a very good job of according this Hulk with feelings…I liked that. Edward, I think, is the better Hulk because he is better at eliciting a response from the audience. You feel for him, you want him to win…I just didn’t feel that for Eric Bana.

TIH didn’t have me gripping my seat like Iron Man; I put it at a close second. What TIH did have me do was root for the hero…I wanted him to win. And against a very strong adversary (the Abomination), TIH was put to the test. He was smaller, but smarter…he didn’t rely on his strength alone; I liked that too. The action was good, the fights were good, the acting was good…it was a good movie for the kids and for adults like me that want to lose themselves for 90 minutes of watching a good fight between comic book characters.

Overall, a good summer movie. I would recommend taking the kids (go during the day…it’s cheaper!) and enjoy. I have a totally separate post on the cost of movies these days…I won’t go into that here, but I will say that is why my visits are few and far between (with the exception of these past two films and Hancock…gotta see Will!)…

Next Up: I don’t know…I still haven’t watched The Great Debaters

Don’t Take A Listen: Tha Carter III

I don’t see it…I don’t understand what the deal is. The flow is choppy and strangled, the voice is annoying and at times, slurred and sloppy. But with his CD selling over a million copies in a week, I wanted to see what the hubbub was about so I signed into Rhapsody and listened. I was slapped in the face by some of the shittiest Hip-Hop I have ever heard.

Is this it? Why embrace Wayne? I need someone to explain his attraction, his appeal…I just don’t get it. I’m going to listen to Kanye, Common, The Roots…something that makes sense and gives me a sense that all is not lost; cause this bullshit makes me feel like it’s all over.

Is it my age? Is it that I require more maturity or that I require someone of substance? I admit that I occasionally like a “hood” record; I’m down with club bangers (I like to listen to them in the car), and dig the tune that is about nothing every now and then. But usually, there is some appeal to the song…it speaks to me in some way. Tha Carter III is full of nonsense; full of “bitches” for no reason, full of “run up in a n**** house and shoot his grandmother up,” full of “I’m getting money like a mu-fucka…” Many may take this as me downing Wayne; not true. Looking at him, he seems like a cool enough dude, and I dig him for his come-uppence…I just don’t like dude’s music.

I don’t belittle anyone’s choice in music. You like what you like. I just know one thing: if this is the hottest MC in the game, the game is in the 4th quarter and the other team has a 30 point lead (Shout out to the Celts!)…

My love for Hip-Hop runs deep; but I’m ’bout to give up. I don’t know if I can stand what it is becoming. I keep trying to remind myself with Pac and Biggie, with PE and EPMD, with Rakim and The Roots…but when you are bombarded with this shit right here, what do you do? I’m finna give up…

Happy Juneteenth!

A commemoration of the announcement of the abolition of slavery, Juneteenth is celebrated on this day every year. For some of us, it is merely a day to spend in the park, barbecuing and playing games. Keep in mind though, the thought of freedom. Freedom has brought us to this day, this moment in time, this period in our lives when we are facing one historic moment after another. Thank those that have come before us.

“Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime.”

~ W.E.B. Du Bois
