MovieWatcher: Iron Man

My son is out of school for the summer and yesterday, he was walking around the house proclaiming his boredom. I think we were both a little stir crazy, so we got dressed and headed out the door. We had no destination, really; we just needed to get out of the house.

I broke down and we settled on going to a movie in the afternoon. I haven’t been to a movie since seeing “Dreamgirls” and I am opposed to the high prices that movies charge. I even snuck in my own drink (thank God for big purses!), but I have to have popcorn so I paid $4.75 for a small bag of popcorn…$4.75!! Anyway, I was expecting to sit through this movie and be totally bored and disinterested; however, this was a movie that held my attention from beginning to end…amazing!

Iron Man is everything that you want a superhero flick to be. There is the good guy, and the bad guy; the pretty girl, and the dangerous situations, and the action is incredible. The storyline is actually pretty good; it puts at the forefront of the mind the idea of not taking accountability for contributing to the ills of the world. Tony Stark is a billionaire industrialist who manufactures weapons. During a trip to Afghanistan, he is part of a convoy that is attacked by the very weapons that his company manufactured. Thus begins the inner turmoil that births Iron Man.

I love Will Smith; he has been my crush since…since I can remember. But he has now got to make room for Robert Downey, Jr. RDJ is perfect in this role. He is the perfect combination of snarky, smarmy, egotistical billionaire who just happens to be a brilliant engineer. RDJ has always been on my list of actors that I would watch; the talent is there, and watching him go through his years of drug use was harrowing. It is hard to watch someone with a gift throw it away; but I am so glad that once again, he is back to light up the screen. This role is outside anything he has done, and he does it so well. I’m not too keen on this upcoming movie, “Tropic Thunder,” where he plays a Black man (?!), because I think it is unnecessary.

Iron Man is a good film to take the kids to see…maybe your 8 year olds and up. There is a lot to understand about this movie and the smaller kiddies may not get it. They will love the action and the Iron Man flying and blowing up stuff, but the other stuff they won’t get.

Rating: 8

Up next: Still The Great Debaters…I have it; I just haven’t watched it yet…
