The Roots get in your head…oh, they cover the knowledge with some fly ass beats and shit that makes you want to move, but ultimately, the words get at you. You find yourself moved beyond the beats and listening to Black Thought spit some serious knowledge at you in a way that blows your ass away. It is real, y’all…The Roots are what Hip Hop should be.

With Rising Down, The Roots take you back to a time where Hip Hop stood for something. Amongst all the bogus rap music that is thrown at us today, every now and again, we catch glimmers of hope with those rare musicians and icons of Hip Hop that we can rely on to remind us of what it means…The Roots do that. When you need Hip Hop to stand for something, you go to Talib, you go to Mos, you definitely go to The Roots…
This CD is outstanding. I’ve spent all morning listening to it, and each time I go through it, there is something new, something interesting, something revolutionary to be heard. The CD starts with a bang, with a inner-band phone call that escalates into a yelling match…it then jumps right into “Rising Down,” featuring Styles P and Mos Def…you can’t go wrong with that, ever…
The most radio friendly track on this album is “Rising Up,” and even with Chrisette Michele singing the radio friendly hook and the funky ass go-go beats, it still delivers something you should wrap your mind around. Other beauties include…hell, I can’t choose, it’s all good…

This is food for your soul and offers some tasty beats as well…I’ll take that…
Sojourner has gifted this blog with the E for Excellence Award! I am always touched when anyone thinks that this space is worthy of recognition, so I humbly say thank you…and pass it on to those spots that I think deserve the award:
Necole Bitchie- the sister does her thing! This is my spot for celebrity news…I pretty much check here first before I go anywhere else…
Songs In The Key Of Life- Instantly connected with Vivrant because of two things: 1) she recognizes that music is the soundtrack of her life (man, my life could be a musical for real); and 2) she’s a Jill Scott fan (I instantly side with anyone who loves Jill like I do)…plus the music is always on point at V’s spot…
Afro Sugar - this will always be one of my favorite spots…a celebration of the beauty of women…
Hello Negro - always timely, always insightful, always to the point…
Shae-Shae’s Blog - I love Shae’s blog because she keeps it real…and she is always timely with her news and reports…
Eclectik-Relaxation- this is a different kind of brotha right here! Fresh and unique, E is on some different random stuff…me likey!
Tales In Black - I have learned so much about the African Diaspora from this site in the time that it has been up…great, great information!
And although Invisible-Cinema has already received this award, I have to put her on my list because I cannot go a day without visiting IW…and that goes for Electronic Village and Cooper @ Wonderland or Not as well…

Ah, Bob Marley…the singer who is able to create a mood of contentment and relaxation, no matter what song you are listening to. There is truth in a Bob Marley song; the depth of honesty is part of the attraction that many feel to Marley…the other reason for attraction is quite simple: the man was quite simply blessed with a voice and a talent that was and will always be one of the best ever.

One of the best things about Marley is that his songs always transported you to the best places of your imagination…I listen to “Stir It Up” and immediately imagine being in an island bar or restaurant, wrapped in a sarong, sipping on a frosty beverage of some kind, slowly swaying to the hypnotic beat of this masterpiece of a song. Then along comes him…beautiful, tall, and without speaking we…oh, wait a minute, where was I?
Listening to Bob Marley always puts me in a relaxed mood; the nature of his music is calming and demands that you sit back and listen to the words. There is also a socio-political vibe to his music that pushes you to live better, and never take a day of your life for granted. Marley’s “Redemption Song” reminds us all to live our lives not afraid, free our minds, follow our passions, and fight for what we believe in…at least that’s the message I get from it…

Man, I’ve been busy all day! Changing this, moving that…life is hectic when you’ve got to hustle! As you all know, I’m unemployed and with all this time on my hand, I’ve developed a cramp in my hand from writing and a permanent craw from all the typing that I’ve done…but I’m happy. At least with where I am…now if only I can get my son to clean up his damn room and walk the dog…
So, I wanted to hip you to some changes that I’ve made…Live Marvalously, short-lived as it was, is no more…it is now “Where Butterflies Rest Easy” and can be found at ButterfliesRestEasy…no need for me to pay to host my stories quite yet…but there is something that I will pay to host…my online Sports mag!
Yep, I am launching a little online mag that focuses on Sports from this chick’s point of view! I’ve spent the past two months researching and trying to decide what to focus the mag on, and finally came to realize that, hey…I love sports…and why not make it about that? So, that’s what it is…I get to talk about a bunch of men, all the time…who doesn’t love that? I promise not to leave out the wonderful women athletes, believe that…
It’s not quite ready yet…I’ve put a couple of posts on it about the NBA playoffs and the NFL Draft, but they are just test posts so I can see how the layout looks…so far, so good…I should have it ready to view to the public in a week or so…
I’ll keep you posted on the progress and let you know when the big unveiling happens…how exciting!
I also have another pseudonym now…I’ll keep that secret too, for now…
It’s all love…
Once again, the blogosphere will lift up our powerful voices in unity to execute change.
On the 27th of each month, this blog will participate in the “Am I Not Human” campaign, aimed at asking the masses to remember humanity when considering the atrocities being perpetrated against the people of Darfur and Tibet.
We are all human beings, and we must not turn a blind eye to the situation in Darfur.
What can you do to add your voice? Download the Roots of Humanity e-book to gather a list of ways you can take action.
In the meanwhile, begin by taking the following actions:
-
E-mail or call the Olympic Corporate Sponsors
-
Pledge to turn off the commercials of Olympic Sponsors during the Games
-
Write to the UN Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace
-
Petition the International Olympic Committee
You can do all of these things through the Dream for Darfur Web site.
For more information, please visit the Roots of Humanity virtual campaign headquarters.
We can make a change…we can make a difference…
